British Couple Attempt Full Unsupported Crossing of World’s Third Largest Ice Cap
On 16th August, ultra endurance athletes Tarka L’Herpiniere and Katie-Jane Cooper will embark for Chile on yet another world first expedition. Their demanding journey, ‘Rivers of Ice’, will attempt to traverse the complete length of the Southern Patagonian Ice Cap without the aid of sail kites or pre-placed food caches.
Their fully unsupported journey will see them kayak, ski and climb 554km across the world’s third largest ice cap in as little as 37 days. The pair will paddle storm-whipped fjords, traverse across crevasse-laced glaciers, scramble through jumbled ice falls, climb icy peaks and rappel vertical cliffs, whilst withstanding ferocious winter blizzards. To put the ‘Rivers of Ice’ journey into perspective, there have been only 2 previous expeditions to complete full crossings. The first took 54 days with the aid of sail kites and the second took 98 days with pre-placed food caches.

Ben Saunders
Ben Saunders is a record-breaking long-distance skier; he is the youngest person to have skied solo to the North Pole and he also holds the record for the longest solo Arctic journey by a Briton.
With three North Pole expeditions under his belt, Ben has skied more than 2,500km (1,500 miles) in the high Arctic, since 2001, which he recently worked out equates to two percent of his entire life living in a tent.
Ben is currently preparing for two groundbreaking polar expeditions: the first is an expedition to the geographic North Pole with the aim of setting a speed record. Ben aims to achieve this alone, unsupported and on foot.
The second project, will be the first return journey to the South Pole on foot; from McMurdo at the edge of Antarctica, to the South Pole, and back to the coast. At 1,800 miles (2,900km) and four months it will be the longest unsupported polar journey in history.

Roz Savage
Roz will be the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic as an entrant in a race, the previous solo female rows having been independent expeditions. The record for a solo female rower on the Canaries-Caribbean route, set by Anne Quemere in 2003, is 56 days.

Joint Forces Expedition to Makalu 2004
The expedition took place during the pre-monsoon season (Mar-Jun 2004) and involved 26 personnel drawn from across the 3 Services. Under a common banner the expedition comprised 2 teams, each with their own distinctive objectives. This website provides full details on both elements of the expedition; the attempt by a 14 strong team to climb the south east ridge of Makalu (8463m) and the ascent of Mera Peak (6436m) and attempt on Baruntse (7100m) by 12 more junior servicemen and women.
